WEIR ROSE BOWL 2009


The AFF Sapphires finished the 2009 Weir Rose Bowl tournament in second The Auckland Football Sapphires finished runners-up in the girls section of the 2009 Weir Rose Bowl tournament in Cambridgeplace after a tight 2-1 loss to Harbour A in the final at St Peter's College in Cambridge in October.

The Sapphires took the lead in the final via a goal to Metro FC's Annie Byrne but despite playing some good possession football in horrible conditions, the Harbour side prevailed with two goals in the second half.

Earlier the Sapphires, coached by Steven Upfold and Liz Beggs, advanced to the final courtesy of a last four penalty shootout win over the AFF Rubies (coached by Ian Davidson and Alessandro Fantoni) after the two teams finished regular and extra time tied at 0-0.

The AFF Diamonds (coached by Jeff Mitchell and Angela Wallbank-Valamaka) finished in fifth spot after a 9-0 win over Harbour B in the placings playoffs.

On the boys side, the AFF Spurs (coached by Simon Richards) fell 2-1 to Harbour A in the semi-finals while the AFF Strikers (coached by Mike Murray and Kris Pinnock) were beaten 1-0 by the eventual champions, Waikato Bay of Plenty Athletic in the last four.

AFF Strikers player Tinashe Marowa (Ellerslie AFC) was named the overall tournament MVP for the boys section of the tournament.

Marowa was part of the Strikers side who were unbeaten in pool play and finished top of their group.Ellerslie AFC's Tinashe Marowa was named the overall tournament MVP for the boys section

The AFF Storm (coached by Rowan Adams and Craig Gillingham) and AFF Stars (coached by Matt Jorgensen) both finished their tournaments with penalty shootout losses to Waikato Bay of Plenty City and Waitakere respectively.
